- PGVIEW 2.0
-
- by Peter Donnelly
- and Stuart Gillespie
-
-
- PGVIEW is an unofficial, unauthorized save-game viewer and editor for
- Strategic Simulations, Inc.'s wonderful wargame PANZER GENERAL(TM). It also
- contains a handy equipment browser with (for registered users) full
- specifications of all 424 unit types.
-
- Stuart Gillespie laid the groundwork, dissecting the PG file format and
- writing the code for PGVIEW version 1. Peter Donnelly thought the program
- deserved a snappier interface and converted it to Turbo Vision, going from
- C++ to Pascal along the way and adding a few features. The authors hope
- you'll find this new version easier to use and more pleasing to the eye.
-
- The program enables the changing of many game variables. Among other things
- it lets you boost your own prestige and lower your enemy's. You can change
- the date of Poland to make better equipment available - or just turn your
- Pz1As into Tigers. You can recruit Bulgarian Infantry, pump them up with
- steroids, load them onto Me262s, and send them to take Moscow. You can give
- an extra ration of gasoline to your favorite heavy bomber, mount your
- infantry on tanks, or, if you have a mind for it, defend the Gustav Line
- with entrenched Bismarcks. But sorry, we draw the line at editing PBEM
- files.
-
- It should be noted that in this version of PGVIEW we have hard-coded
- limited data from the game's PANZEQUP.EQP file current as of Spring '95
- (i.e. up to version 1.2 of Panzer General). Should any additions or
- changes be made to that file by SSI, there is no guarantee that PGVIEW will
- give accurate results. If registrations warrant, however, we will try to
- keep the program up-to-date.
-
- By the way, registered users, if you copy PANZEQUP.EQP from the CD to the
- hard drive you will have faster loading of the complete unit equipment
- tables when you press Info. The first time you use this feature you'll be
- asked where the EQP file lives. If you ever want to change the default
- path, delete the PGVIEW.CFG file and you will be prompted again.
-
-
- USING PGVIEW
-
- Only limited range-checking is performed, and there is no guarantee that
- the numbers you put in won't blow up PG or worse. Please, back up at least
- your save files before experimenting, and read the DISCLAIMER below.
-
- You can load a save file in two ways: by entering a game number (1-10) on
- the command line (the file has to be in the current directory), or through
- the File menu. When using the latter method, remember that GAME.SV0 is Game
- 1 and so on. Use the Change Directory menu choice to set the current
- directory and drive; the Open File dialog _always_ defaults to the current
- DOS path.
-
- Not all game options are in the Edit Game dialog, because it seemed
- pointless to duplicate the functions of the game itself. Those we have
- included are switches that behave erratically during campaign games in at
- least one version of PG.
-
- In the Edit Unit dialog, clicking on Prev or Next (or using the PgUp and
- PgDn keys) will store the current record with any changes you have made. If
- you wish to discard changes, instead select Cancel or the close box, or use
- the Esc key. The same goes for the Units button in the Edit Game dialog:
- any changes you have made to the game are remembered. But no changes are
- saved to file till you so choose.
-
- To change a unit's equipment type or assign it transport, click on the
- appropriate function-key button in the Edit Unit dialog, or press the
- function key itself. Then, in the equipment list, highlight the type you
- want and click Insert, or press the Ins key. To strip a unit of its organic
- or other transport, highlight the equipment type in the Edit Unit dialog
- and press the Del key. You can't delete a basic unit; to remove a unit from
- the game, set its strength to zero.
-
- Sometimes when you change a unit's location it is not visible on the PG map
- when you load the edited file. Such invisible units are, however,
- selectable and moveable, and will reappear on the next turn.
-
- A tip: when you want to bolster your army at the beginning of a campaign
- scenario, first deploy and then save. Auxiliary troops are not assigned
- until you enter the deployment phase, so you won't be able to edit them in
- the save file from the end of the last scenario. And of course you won't
- yet have access to the new enemy forces.
-
-
- TURBO VISION INTERFACE
-
- Want to rest your mouse hand? You can navigate quickly in dialog boxes by
- pressing Alt plus the highlighted key in the various labels and buttons; if
- there's no cursor in an input box, the Alt is not necessary. Tab and
- Shift-Tab also take you from field to field.
-
- When using the mouse, you can highlight existing text for "first-
- keystroke-deletes" mode by either double-clicking on the field itself or
- single-clicking on its label. The Notes field in the game-edit dialog
- will scroll to accommodate a maximum of 160 characters.
-
-
- REGISTRATION BONUS
-
- You registered users have received a copy of the program with an extra
- feature: the ability to browse the full equipment tables stored in
- PANZEQUP.EQP. The Info button in the Equipment Types dialog brings up full
- information on the selected type including attack and defense strengths,
- initiative, ranges, maximum fuel and ammo, dates of availability, and costs
- to reinforce by one strength point and to build from scratch. (This last
- number is in many cases theoretical, since you can't purchase some types of
- units within the game.) In concert with the sorting facility, the browser
- is a valuable tool for studying the relative merits of different types.
-
- Registration instructions are given on exit from the program.
